When fellow journalism post grad student and sport blogger, Josh Pettitt, came up with the idea of having a ‘best sports icon of the noughties’ blog debate, I wanted to do something different.
Who is a viable, yet thought-provoking candidate, I thought? After considering Ronnie O’Sullivan with his marvelously-idiosyncratic approach, and (the original, portly, R9) Ronaldo, I decided this was not an accolade to be given to someone whose greatness must be explained in detail. It must be fairly ...

Alex, thanks for your post over at The Moxy Project. I totally dug this post of yours, especially because my husband is a huge fan of Lance. We thought for a while about scheming to get over there this summer to watch his “comeback”, but not sure yet if it will happen. Can’t wait to see what he pulls off this year! Cheers.

A great of cycling and of sport, not only for what he achieved but also what he had to battle away from the bike. There are better contenders though.

Is “noughties” now the official nickname for this decade? I wasn’t sure anyone had reached consensus on this.
Still, it’s as good a name as any.

He had no choice. He couldn’t stop; they were going at almost 50mph! Yes MILES!
Lance said afterwards that Beloki was being irresponsible going that fast but he had to stay with him to try and catch Vini.
I don’t really like him either, always preferred Ullrich. Cavendish is the only man now. What a hero.

Good article. I’m not sure why I can’t bring myself to like the guy. It might be the Beloki incident where – although what he did wasn’t easy – it definitely benefitted him more than taking the long way round (i.e. the designated route) would have done. Couldn’t work out why a guy supposedly as good as him would need to take a shortcut.
