[25 October 2009. Make sure you read the sequel[16] to this story when you're finished here.]

Early this summer, the friend who first introduced me to Arduino[17] amazed us with the news that he was moving to France to get married. Once I recovered from the surprise, it occurred to me that putting together some sort of Arduino-based wedding present might be a uniquely fitting thanks for his years of friendship and for helping get me started in this delightful enterprise. And so after weighing ...

What a clever gift! Kudos!

In 1997, our senior project in college involved building a safe that required a combination, an iButton, and lo-and-behold the proper GPS coordinates to open. I interfaced the serial out of a GPS device with a BASIC stamp. The safe, when open, had a serial connection that was used to program the combination and rectangular coordinates needed to open the case.

Anyone who's ever heard of Pythagorean theorem could solve it very quickly and easily. Anyone that passed trigonometry would have to be slapped if they couldn't solve it.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by Skyrmir on Reddit

Except that, in spherical geometry, the Pythagorean theorem only works approximately, even for small triangles; as the triangle gets bigger, it works less and less well. Which means you could get an approximation of the distance to the location, but you'd be pretty far off until you dragged it near enough to the final destination and then you'd have to guess.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by caesararum on Reddit

Trig, sure, but what's the Pythagoream Theorem got to do with it?

4 months, 3 weeks ago by phyzome on Reddit

Hell this concept has been used in countless TV shows and movies too. Even if someone doesn't know the geometry/math behind it they could easily have seen the intersecting circles drawn during some show/movie where they are triangulating the position of some radio source.
