pierre-luc gelineau,

I use summitpost.com for nearly every but of pre-trip planning and deciding what mountain I want to climb. For a more detailed account I’d rely more on books and guide advice, but summitpost is great nonetheless. As far as US mountains, 14ers.com is great if you visit Colorado like I do.

I agree on the 5.7 for beginning mountaineers, but I find that most people have sport climbing experience if they are even thinking about a technical mountain route ...

I agree with Chris that most tricky part of Mountaineering is the descent. It hurts more while climbing down the mountain…going up still can be easier than coming down.

Charlie:

Climb High Sleep Low: It’s basically a motto to ensure you get good sleep and are protected against unnecessary weather exposure. Basically, on easy 14ers, this doesn’t really apply. On larger or more difficult mountains, such as Rainier, it definitely holds true.

Say you are making Camp 1 at 8,000 ft. You break camp and spend the night. The next day, you want

Sorry if I’m slow but could you clarify the “camp high, sleep low” idea? So if you make your advance camp and then come back to sleep at a lower camp, don’t you sleep at the advance camp the next night? So do climbers just do this to have one good sleep night instead of 2 bad sleep nights?

Glad to see a word in for the mountains out here in Colorado. I do it every summer, and it’s great exercise and a real adventure!

I’m right in the middle of reading an awesome book by Ed Viesturs called “No Shortcuts To The Top”. His motto is: “Reaching the summit is optional. Getting down is mandatory.” Whether you’re on Everest or an easy class 1

I read that too Chris, I would love to visit the Himalayas one day – not sure if I could deal with the thin atmosphere though – I am not a big fan of nausea and flu like symptoms.

It should be mentioned that the most dangerous part of the climb is the descent, that’s where most people get hurt.

If you really enjoy mounteneering I would suggest that you read. Freedom of the Hills mounteneering. Or as we call it amongst the climbers in Montreal. The climber’s bible. Great technical advice on just about everything there is to know about mountaineering plus some info on the philosophy of a mounteneer.

Great article but I find that 5.9 for a new climber to be a bit high since most
