Rammstein: Teutonic Metal Gods Conquer America?

For most non-Teutons the idea of German rock is not very appealing. The fatherland of Bach and Beethoven may well have produced many interesting experimental groups (Kraftwerk,  Einstürzende Neubauten etc) but on a global, top 40 level it’s an entirely different matter. Consider:

1) The Scorpions- hair metal popular in the 80s, approximately as good as Winger.

2) KMFDM- plodding industrial metal from the late 80s/early90s.

3) That Nena chick of ‘99 luftballons’ fame.

It´s metal for people who don´t like ROCK and who just don´t want to admit that they prefer Marschmusik.

HOly frikkin yeah, this writer just lost all of my respect. What kind of tool runs down the Scorpions like that. Either Shenker brother is all you need for greatness. I swear what are they teaching in schools today….

I never really knew who KMFD was but I happened to hear that song. I bought that CD for no other reason. But it was a good album. I always thought they were KMFD because of the lyrics.

KFMD is a Drug against War….

I cannot take Rammstein seriously. They´re putting us on. Their music is what happens when you apply central planning to rock. Boring family men coming up with harmless provocations. The lyrics are a big joke and the music is crass and artless – nothing to it. I love power in music, and monotony plus sound pressure doesn´t equal power.

I understand the lyrics all too well. Rammstein always sounded like a big joke to me. They are not taking their own stuff seriously. No way.

This dude knows nothing about metal. Simulated male rape does not a metal show make. These guys will never be mentioned in the same breath as the metal gods of Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. and they will certainly never be in the same zip code as the greatest metal band of all time…Iron Maiden!

Have to agree, I always liked KMFDM, but to compare them to Rammstein is not fair two differnt forms of music.

i just can't get into rammstein though i do recognize their talent.

and the winger/scorpions thing….yes, i believe the scorps are to germans what winger is to americans…embarrassing.

Daniel,

How about "Ohne Dich" or "Ich Will"…here are two songs whose message you may appreciate and even respect. Aren't you overlooking American bands in your zeal to hate Rammstein…I personally would choose them any day than most US banks.

I first heard Rammstein in Vienna in a very dark and dirty bar. Good times! I bought several tracks when I got back to the states. All music in Vienna sounded good to me - in the bars, in the stores, in the restaurants and on the radio. I miss that place, they really do have an ear for music.

I don't think American bands such as Metallica have anything to worry about with these guys. Talent trumps men assraping one another here. For now.

You know you are getting old when your first inclination is not to listen to the music, but to post that "those boys need a bath". BTW Winger = Scorps? Lord.

Ha ha. I was prepared for some really heavy thrash metal and got that mopey stuff, not that I'm a big fan of thrash. Sixth album? That's just laziness. For some nice off the US radar music some might want to YouTube Cerys Matthews. Beautiful with an even lovelier voice. And she's Welsh!

Wow, you weren't joking about not seeing the original songs in the same way after Laibach grinds the narrative out of them. Who knew that Opus loved them some totalitarianism?

The Scorpions, a hair metal band from the 80s only as good as Winger? Are you smoking something? Does the name Michael Schenker mean anything to you? To compare the Scorpions to Winger betrays your ignorance.

Rammstein RULES. I must say that as an avid metal fan and Conservative, I am thrilled to see this post, and even more thrilled about Daniel Kalder contributing here! I am sure that this post is going to get a billion negative responses from people who have never heard Rammstein and don't like Metal, but I will say this: Metal is one of the most diverse forms of music and some of the most complex ... As far as I'm concerned, Lamb of God and Woe of Tyrants crush Rammstein. And that's just the straightforward thrash metal, not even getting into the Viking metal.

"Flake was also Lindemann’s victim in simulated male rapes that took place on a nightly basis during the band’s tours of the late 90s and early 2000s" Oh yea, that's some REAL entertainment alright. No wonder the children of the world are becoming desensitized and violent, there are too many entities out there promoting it all.

"members of the band were arrested in Massachusetts when Lindemann prepared to rape Flake on stage with an ejaculating dildo." "it might mean that Rammstein will come here on tour. And as someone who has seen the band live four times in three different countries I can reassure you that that would be a very good thing indeed." You Brits are still nursing a grudge over the whole Declaration ... See all content

I'm a fan of Rammstein. Don't care for their politics but i don't speak German so I don't care when I listen. I'm a fan of Audioslave as well which three of the members are far lefties but they don't really talk politics in most songs so I can listen to them too. Funny thing is that those three members were also members of Rage against the Machine; super left band and ... See all content

In my opinion, German metal is best sung in German because I don't speak German and all I can judge by is: "wow, that sounds cool!" I suspect, much like listening to Calle 13, if I could understand Rammstein's lyrics, I in all my prudery, would have a heart attack and regress to Hanson.

I've seen the fire-breathing though and it's awesome! Much better than Lady

Eh. Give me the crazy lads from Leipzig called Die Prinzen any day–anyone who agrees with Rush Limbaugh about feminism and the Oprahization of America (as I do) can appreciate "Frauen sind die neuen Männer", the title track of their latest album.

Wow Kalder your homophobic lashing of a kraut band was impressive. Your diatribe even has my heavy metal listening son reevaluating his admiration of this band, introduced to him by his friend stationed in Germany. Please don't trash Lordi with your much loved blog and amerocentrism, or I won't let you have the red crayon.

Kit, the way things seem to be headed that may be a very small realm indeed.

At my advanced age I suspect that I am not qualified to have an opinion on todays

music let alone Germany's version of rock music. I haven't read the article on

Hasselhoff to perform in Berlin and other than I know he is popular over there

I'm not sure German music in general

Rammstein makes me think of college and working at the campus radio station. Rammstein was one of our more popular artists.

And what's wrong with KMFDM?
