great photos, but, that is complete bullshit. I go down to the Dominican Republic every year to help build homes in the poor communities. There are lots of people who have made it out of poverty by working hard getting education and starting legitimate business there. Baseball and crime are not the only ways out of poverty.

@eddietours: do you have statistics before "the revolution" to compare the progress ? Did you born in Cuba or in any time of your life live in Cuba as a normal citizen and not as a foreign ? I will glad that you answer those questions.

What a sensationalist headline, the pics are fine but saying the the only way to succeed in DR is baseball or crime is a fallacy, add being a corrupt politician and maybe you'll be close to the reality. I was born and raise In DR, middle class both parent educators and this is just kinda of an insult to the working class dominican. Just a note, we have a public health system run by the government, ... See all content

I was born in the Dominican too. Middle class family in Santo Domingo.

My school used to face Hipolito's house, which I always found funny. Eh, I was young. I thought it was like facing the white house. (Years ago, by the way.)

Anyways, you're right. I love my Dominican Republic, and it's fun to hear that old phrase. Ya tu sabe', haha.

It's not as bad as everybody thinks

Article too negative. Makes it sounds like every poor person in Dom Rep who isn't a baseball player is a criminal.

Simply isn't true.

Poverty there is like poverty anywhere, including here. Its hard to get out of the slum but its possible. Education. Get a job.

I spent two years in Brazil amongst the poor people - and I have to say, leaving the poverty situation is nearly impossible. If only education and a job were the final solution

Here's a group that is trying to use baseball as a tool to develop young men of character to keep them out of crime and provide them an avenue to greater things.

Great, just what we need, more uneducated "athletes". Why not educate people? Playing baseball? Seriously?

I was also born in the Dominican Republic and lived there from. July of 2006 to June of 2009. Baseball is certainly a way of life down there. Almost like Americans and sports. We love our baseball. I got better at baseball playing down there. This article can be true. Not everyone get the same equal opportunities down there. There are a lot of corruption too. We shouldn't feel so bad for the people ... See all content

I was born in the Dominican Republic and I can say that yes Baseball is a large way out of poverty in the country however the only other option is not poverty. There are actually many opportunities in the D.R. that help people come out of poverty. For example you can go to college without having any money and graduate in any field you would like.

ullshit to you sir, i have lived here all of my life, and while im not upper middle class, im still not poor, im 22 years old, working since i was 18, my mother has also been working forever, my dad left us and never put a penny however dont live anywhere near the line of extreme poverty depicted on those pictures.

Theres a lot of middle lower class too, is not as black and white as you makes

ull shit, i've seen this first hand. theres no middle class in dr, only upper middle class makes me sick. i actually feel sorry when i go to college and see kids my age working for pennies in construction building other facilities for the school. even in baseball there's no money, they put their own time and effort.

A Brief History of Baseball and the Dominican Republic: For over 100 years, baseball has been at the center of cultural life in the Dominican Republic. Though the origins of baseball in the Dominican aren’t exactly known, historians suggest that baseball first came to the island around the 1880s. Though it is a historical misconception that American Marines brought the game to the island during the ... See all content
