I have much respect for Typography and those who can use it well. I feel that one of the biggest challenges in graphic design is choosing fonts and applying them well to the design. All without distracting the reader from the main content or design.

Hi Patti! That’s a very thoughtful question. I’m glad you brought it up.

I agree with you that typography’s original purpose is to enhance and communicate the message well. And there are some posters and designs in this roundup with type so stylized, it’s difficult to read them.

Well personally, I’ve discovered as I delved deeper into appreciating type that there’s more to it than clarity; there’s also this pure artistic delight in appreciating type just by the way they look. I know some people who care more about the upstrokes and downstrokes of letters in certain fonts than how readable they are. It’s like art in general; fans of realistic art may never understand why other people appreciate abstract art, but both genres are appreciated by many anyway.

And since typography has been liberated and enhanced just as the printing press is by the advances of the Digital Age, it was just a matter of time before people started thinking of other ways to use type. :)

Your comment about haute couture made me remember a magazine article written by a fashion editor-in-chief I know personally. She explained in that article, for those who didn’t get what haute couture was about (I sure was one of them until I read the article!), that this kind of high fashion was a kind of escapism. Free your imagination, explore the possibilities, that sort of thing. Though you definitely won’t catch me wearing one of those eccentric outfits down the street, I take my hat off to that kind of innovative spirit. I’d like to think the same kind of thinking can be applied to something like type, too.

I really enjoyed looking at these. Many beautiful pieces of art.

I must say though, while they are all gorgeous to look at, many if not most of them fail to communicate well. I found it necessary to really work hard before I could figure out what they said. Isn’t typography’s entire purpose to enhance the message, to communicate? I’m certainly not suggesting that all type be plain old black Helvetica on a white background, but surely an important part of the typographic artist’s job is to make his message legible.

So many of these examples remind me of the kind of thing you see walking down the catwalk at haute couture shows in Milan or Paris: so far beyond clothing as to be almost unrecognizable as such.

Why use words and letters if their message is so deeply buried in stylization and decoration as to make them illegible? ... See all content Hide content
