Research shows that doing as little as 3 half-hour sprint exercise sessions per week had the same beneficial effect on cardiovascular health as 5 hour-long exercises. Each sprint session consisted of sprinting for 30 seconds up to 6 times. This was interspersed with a 4.5 minute rest interval. The outcome of this study may help address the time concerns of busy individuals who need a short exercise routine to help them become healthier. The biggest problem with most people when it comes to exercise ...

You won't be running any marathons doing this but apparently that is not the point?

Under the "Warm-up/Cool-down" theory, it is not good for our bodies to do such intense exercise and then rest abruptly. People who do this might get some "help" with cv fitness but they are also going to get some really sore muscles! Lingering soreness is the number one reason people quit doing exercise so I think this approach might be counter productive.

I've never seen a HIIT program where you rest abruptly. Its always a sprint and then at a slower pace. Its not like you sprint for 20 second, then stand in one place for 30.

I remember something similar a few years back.

A couple of summers ago a friend and I did the tabata protocol on the stationary bikes. Max resistance. 20 seconds on 10-20 seconds rest. During the 20 seconds on you really have to go all out. I remember my legs literally not working after my first workout.

I find doing HIIT on a treadmill, 2min/1min split makes me feel great.

Tabata squats on the other hand totally kicks my fucking ass for about an hour or so but then my body recollects.

The "feel like shit the rest of the day" only happens the first few times you do it, if you continue. After that you feel effing awesome the rest of the day. High on endorphins. It's great.

So true.

I'm an avid cyclists. When I'm in good shape and I do a short very high intensity ride I recovery quickly and feel great. When I'm not in good shape and try the same thing I'll "feel like shit the rest of the day"

It's all about suffering the first week or two and then maintaining a good level of fitness, increasing that level as you go.

If, like me, there are various reasons why you exercise (part bod health, part brain health), why not mix it up? My primary exercise is running, but I do a couple sessions of Sprint 8 per week on a rower, as well as lift weights once or twice per week. The Sprint 8 notion is to go 30 seconds all out, 90 secs rest X 8.

Feeling awful has diminished as I've gotten accustomed to exercising at

Thanks for the article. I've been thinking about incorporating more HIIT into my routine. This helped!

What!

So my 1 hour uphill runs are a waste of time?

I don't think so.....

It's not that they're a waste of time. It's just that interval training is more effective for your cardiovascular health (and fat burning).

Why don't you link directly to the research, instead of some blog?

The blog that's his. Is there a rule against spamming your own blog?

Yeah. Interval training has been rising up in the fitness world over the last 5 years especially.
