Nice article, John. I think the old adage, “write what you know,” has done more harm than good. I say, write what you can imagine and let what you know influence it, not limit it.

Ideas are all around. All you have to do is open your eyes and notice them.
Love the idea of finding the deviation. My own ideas come from the “what if” applied to every day circumstances. I haven’t yet ventured into your realms of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, but I’ll get there eventually. Super piece – you know I’m a fan. Peace, Linda

I’m glad you all enjoyed the article. I don’t mean to discourage all use of personal lives in fiction, but rather to encourage examining why you use it and where it holds you back. I wrote about personal experience in this very article! But for today’s Bathroom Monologue? Absolutely not!
This is exactly what I needed to hear Right Now. I’m just beginning to learn to create fiction, and I’ve noticed my work so far has way too much of my life in it, even if they’re just little snippets. I need to let that imagination loose, don’t I?

Excellent Advice coming from a seasoned writer.
Fantastic article John! Though some of this I already do, it helps to have your creative voice behind the ideas, the suggestions, and the advice that writing is a personal experience, to share or not to share, and that imagination is plausible if you allow yourself to ask, learn, laugh, and research – that I think is a big key. Still, I don’t know how you do so much of it.

Great article. Now I’m imagining clicking on those Bathroom Monologues and seeing what opens on my computer. Hmm. Could it lead to the sewer or will I be trapped in a public toilet with my favorite musician, forced to listen and critic his newest song idea. :) Thanks for the inspiration, John.
