A couple of weeks ago, my friend N over at Two Chicks Nest sent me an article she found in the NY Times about backyard chickens. You don’t have to read it. Instead, the article can pretty much be summarized with the following:

Sara, because of your posts I’ve seriously considered raising a few chickens (and keeping a garden) at our new home. I’d really be interested in learning more about the costs and equipment you and Y use in caring for your chickens. Have you ever heard of the Eggloo? I wonder if it would work well in our backyard.

My parents raised chickens when I was growing up. They were really great, but it was nearly impossible to keep raccoons and possums from getting into the coop they slept in and killing them. And I think their poo made the soil too acidic for my dad to be able to garden. The eggs were awesome, though.

I’ve really appreciated getting to read about your experience. As a vegetarian, I don’t mind that people choose to eat meat and other animal products. I just wish they’d think more about where those thing come from and, if they can afford to, buy free range. I think it’s great that you can raise awareness about free range vs. factory farm chickens.

I was just wondering about how your chickens were doing the other day. J and I don’t have a backyard yet (and I have no idea how Orange County feels about chickens, but I would imagine they don’t like them) but we’re interested in having chickens when we do.
