It’s been quite some time since the the first wave of Cal Ripken deciples made up a trio of the league’s elite shortstops. Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter now play together, with Rodriguez moving to third base (though a swap would probably improve the Yankees left side). Nomar Garciaparra has battled wrist injuries and become a designated-hitter option as a free agent this year. But Miguel Tejada also won an MVP at the position, and is a free agent this year ...

What? No mention of former All-Star and 300 hitter Felipe Lopez who is a free agent?

Not much talent here. The top 2 on the list both had .316 OBP last year & the terrible Khalil Greene even makes the list.

So basically, shortstops the Red Sox have passed on.

Why are they even mentioning Garciaparra in this article? He hasn't been worth anything since he left Boston. Plus he has become more a first baseman than a Shortstop these past few seasons too.

The Red Sox should never have let OCab go after '04; they haven't found a steady SS yet.

I agree, but there seems like something behind the scenes happened with him that soured the team on him. Talk radio brings it up every now and again (especially when he's available), but they can never go into details about it or they just don't know enough facts to go on.
