Were I an aspiring farmer in search of fertile land to buy and plow, I would seriously consider moving to Detroit. There is open land, fertile soil, ample water, willing labor, and a desperate demand for decent food. And there is plenty of community will behind the idea of turning the capital of American industry into an agrarian paradise. In fact, of all the cities in the world, Detroit may be best positioned to become the world’s first one hundred percent food self-sufficient city.

Wow, I certainly appreciate your graphic description of Detroit and their current status. Good for us who do not live there to know what are sister cities are experiencing. I moved from NH to TN 5 years ago with the idea of buying some land and growing some stuff. Mr. Dowie presents a nice fantasy, I do wish it could happen, but it won’t. I was born in Detroit and grew up in the area, “escaping” to Colorado in 1981. The last time the big three were going belly up. My family history in the are predates Michigan’s statehood.
