Sometimes bands just don’t get the recognition they deserve in their homeland. But if at first you don’t succeed…then move halfway across the world. We take a look at 5 great American acts that cracked the UK while being ignored in the USA.

White Stripes

The Breeders

Pavement

The Pixies

Jimi Hendrix

5) The White Stripes

While the White Stripes UK tour in 2001 sold out fast, ticket sales were much slower for their US tour. Jack ...

Just proves that the Brits were right on target with Hendrix......British Invasion groups would all agree....Amazing that his own country didn't realize this initially..

Don't forget Hinder, which is an American Nickelback.

Tori Amos was big in the UK before the US. That was a deliberate approach by the her record company because they were unsure how the US audience would take to her, and thought the UK would be more receptive.

Not a band, but Eva Cassidy is probably one of the best known US acts to be discovered in the UK.

So what *good* American band *didn't* get discovered in Europe? It's actually pretty hard to think of really good American bands. America produces excellent solo musicians (Hendrix, Dylan, etc.), but if you think about the truly iconic bands, they're all British. In fact, I would wager that I can name ten British bands that, had they been American, would have clearly been the greatest American band ... See all content

Velvet Underground? Ramones? E Street Band? And that is just within rock music. In terms of influence, America blows Britain out of the water. While Zep and the Stones were both amazing, they cribbed their style heavily from the blues, which is pure Americana. Tons of British bands also borrowed from American Folk music, and then there's Jazz, which is completely dominated by American musicians.

I would also add most African American blues man who were studied/emulated and revered in the UK/Europe and got no respect in the U.S. That is in the main stream.... With out them many of the great english bands to come Zeppelin etc..wouldn't have happened.

Dugg for The Pixies. I <3 Frank Black.

I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band— or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.

Kurt Cobain

And after they become a smash hit overseas, we're all like, "oh, I've loved this band since they were playing at nightclubs back in the day!"

Putting the Breeders on here is a stretch as Tanya and Kim and Josephine were already established musicians in Throwing Muses, Pixies (who were both signed to 4AD) and Perfect Disaster. Good idea for a post though.

I've never read a story that fast. Clicked the link, White Stripes, The Breeders, Pavement, The Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, boom, done. 2 seconds flat.

I think Kings of Leon deserve to be on this list too.

Where is Kings Of Leon?

4 months, 3 weeks ago by Nate on Wordpress

Rush is Canadian. They were made popular because of Americans, not Canadians. Their first radio play was in the US.

Touche.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by VanSoaked on Digg

The Killers

Internationally popular now but spotted by a British record exec, passed on by his company Warners. He stuck with them and helped sign them to a British indie label (Lizard King).

Like the White Stripes, they have had more success in Britain.

Mr. Brightside premiered on UK radio.

Dugg for Hendrix and Hendrix ONLY

Exactly. I thought the list said "5 Great American Bands". I only see 1.

I think this just demonstrates that us Brits are the clever ones.

We'll take your Hendrix and Pixies while giving you back The Spice Girls, Susan Boyle and Kanye West..

:)

Since The Breeders were formed by members of the Pixies, and signed by the same label shouldn't they be grouped together. It seems weird that a band that rose from the ashes of another on the same label counts as a "discovery", especially on a list with only 5 entries.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by flamincheney on Digg

Yeah, you would think that the author of the article would find it relevant to say that the breeders were formed after the pixies, by the bassist for the pixies, and then signed to their label.

Great list, but where is Kings of Leon?? Their first album (their best, most honest) didn’t see any initial commercial appeal in America, but was HUGE in the UK, not to mention around the world.

It wasn’t until they expanded their sound in the past year or so that they ever made it big in America….on their FOURTH album.

Now 90% of the people I see at their shows

Kings of Leon?

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were touring with a hit album in UK when they found out that people finally were listening back home. They belong on this list, too.

Petty rocks! One of the greats!

4 months, 3 weeks ago by jshhmr on Digg

Yea, our first tour in the states was rough! We couldn't give tickets away.

It's not like the story came out and found you. However, if it did, I'd suggest pills.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by rednip on Digg

Add Kings of Leon to the list. Their first 2 (and best) albums were ignored in the US.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by stevieraveon on Digg

Kings of Leon =/= a good band

4 months, 3 weeks ago by DownIsTheNewUp on Digg

I'm very surprised they didn't post Faith No More on this list. FNM were far more popular in Europe than the US, so much to the point that when they did a reunion tour this summer there was not one single American gig for the entire thing.

Well, that and my personal opinion that FNM blow all these others (except hendrix of course) out of the water.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by skokage on Digg

So in other words, one great American solo artist and 4 indie groups the author likes?

4 months, 3 weeks ago by ayeroxor on Digg

The Pixies are fairly well known, though. And The White Stripes has been one of the most popular acts of the last ten years. So maybe just 2 indie acts the author likes.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by Apocalyptic0n3 on Digg

@downcheck: Irrelevant to the point I was making. I can name 10-15 songs from them that have received substantial radioplay over the last decade. Very few bands can say that.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by Apocalyptic0n3 on Digg

seriously, the white stripes suck shit

4 months, 3 weeks ago by downneck on Digg

The Breeders? Meh.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by ngmcs8203 on Digg

It's just "Pixies" not "The Pixies"...yep I will be that guy. But they deserve it considering they were a huge influence for some of the best music of my generation.

What is a nickelback?

4 months, 3 weeks ago by Speedy7 on Digg

Ignored in the USA? I don't really think so.

What about The Killers? I remember seeing them supporting British Sea Power (yes, they're a real band) back in... 2003? They took a while to take off.

That's because Europe has better taste in music than we do.

New Order, Joy Division, Electric Light Orchestra, Blur, The Beatles, Radiohead, Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Mew, Phoenix, Daft Punk, The Cure...our music doesn't stand a chance against those guys.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by mywhitenoise on Digg

mywhitenoise, the question is do you know what the fuck you are talking about. America is the originator of blues, jazz and rock, it is just retarded to say Europeans have better taste in music, they are no better or worse than Americans. We may have our hip-hop club top 40 manufactured crap over here, well Europe has their gay rave and trance music which is cookie cutter music as well.

4 months, 3 weeks ago by solid12345 on Digg

darkknight, a few of those bands are good, but most of those bands are kind of lame and suck compared to the UK artists I listed. Had you said something like Talking Heads, Pixies, Built To Spill, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins, Flaming Lips, Velvet Underground, Faith No More, Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, Pavement, and Sonic Youth...then that would be a better argument.

and solid12345

4 months, 3 weeks ago by mywhitenoise on Digg

Are you sure about that

As far as i'm concerned most Europeans listen to techno/rave club garbage that all sounds the same.
