More Money: How to Make More Money if You Are Good with a Computer

This is second in a series of brief tidbits of ideas that will hopefully help you if you need to create more money in your life.
This blog is focusing on “If You Are Good with a Computer.”
1. Teach. Many people need productivity and buy a nice shiny box of software from the office store, take it home, and can’t get through the first pages of instructions. Many people (like me) get frustrated with tutorials and would much rather have someone sitting next to them ...
teaching them how to do fancy spreadsheets, graphics, or accounting.
2. Convert. Convert hard copies to computer files by scanning for people. Convert photos to files for ease of use, safekeeping, and easy storage. Organize their computer files (which are often disorganized and impossible to search) into folders.
3. Do Back-ups and other routine maintenance, e.g. scanning for viruses. This is a great service for a small business that is too busy to be bothered.
4. Design graphics and documents (fliers, posters, business cards, letterhead, etc.) for people. Offer a small service for free to get your foot in the door as there is a lot of competition out there.
5. Website design. To offer this service make sure you know what you’re doing and sell them a packet that includes follow-up changes, and additions.
6. Send emails for businesses that don’t have the knowledge, skill, or time. This has become a real art so make sure you are up on all the trends.
7. Help businesses and business people get out there on the social websites (”Twitter me, baby!)
8. Offer research services. This is especially true for non profits and very busy niche businesses where the wind changes quickly. (I used to pay a researcher a few hundred a month to research what federal grants were about to be announced and who was getting funded by whom in town. She had the resources, the connections, and the time. I didn’t.) Suppose you know a lot about fashion or jewelry or home decor, the small shop owner (who works long, hard days) would probably pay to know what’s new and hot. You could sell this information in the newsletter format to many related businesses.
9. Provide a reminder service, e.g. send hand written birthday cards to your car dealer’s customers (which you would maintain on a simple spreadsheet.) (For an interesting read about this subject, learn about Joe Girard.)
10. Repair computers if this is within your skill base.
Always remember to sell hamburgers to hungry people. In other words find out what people really need, package it well so that you make a good profit, and always guarantee your work.
