Rather than subsidize solar (and open up to all the right-wing craziness that would result)–let’s pull the plug (pun intended) on all the subsidies for fossil and nuclear at every stage in the fuel cycle (including transportation). Boom, all of a sudden, solar is economically competitive.

As a solar installer during the 1980s, I heard the same argument that solar shouldn’t need subsidies to survive.
When Reagan (first) and then the states removed tax credits and subsidies, the industry was destroyed. More people (myself included), lost their jobs than the losses experienced during the retrenchment in the 80s American auto industry.
As long as fossil fuels continue
