Its hard for me to be told Im evil, because I think of myself as someone who is filled with love.

This week marked my first time watching the British TV show, Intelligence Squared.[16] I had the pleasure of viewing a fairly enthralling debate involving Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry. They debated opposite two representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, Archbishop Onaiyekan (of Abuja, Nigeria) and Ann Widdecombe, a conservative member of British Parliament.

If you even have to ask, then they're not all they claim to be.

>Stuff like the action of nuns in Rwanda, etc, that assume that the clergy is always completely immune to to the cultural surroundings, etc.

Your claim that this makes no sense is utterly wrong for a couple of related reasons.

* You're falling into the common fallacy of crediting the Church for its good deeds, and then blaming surrounding factors for its evil deeds. If you're going

thank you for upvoting it. one thing that struck me was that i can't imagine widdecomb and onaiyekan were the best the catholic church had to argue its side. i thought widdecomb did a fair job, but onaiyekan lost me almost immediately. his accent made him a bit difficult to understand, and he was not a particularly dynamic speaker. quite honestly, i felt bad for him.

to me, this debate seemed

although many catholics may find watching this uncomfortable, it does provide an unvarnished look at how a large segment of non-catholics view the catholic church.

>But as long as he tells her she's free from mortal sin despite engaging in this behavior, I'm o.k. with him as her Priest.

what if he tells her that it is gods will that she have sex with him?

It's only a mortal sin for those who believe it is, for everyone else it's just fine.

Well, to be fair, all religions try to control it or outright ban it. Easiest way to control a population! Make then think the fun stuff is bad.

i'm so glad i'm an atheist... i love sex... when i was younger i was terrified of sex. I wasn't raised Catholic, but I was raised Southern Baptist.. we were taught the same thing- sex is bad bad bad.. and you're a bad person (especially if you're a girl) if you have sex before marriage or if you enjoy it (again, especially for girls).

I was raised Mormon, and I'm with you--I was mortally terrified of sex. I literally though I would go to hell forever for thinking "dirty" thought.

Fuck that.
