10 of the Most Creative Video Game Deaths Ever

Now here was a man who knew how to die. (image: 3D Realms)

As a gamer, I play a lot of video games. In playing a lot of video games, I also die a lot. I mean all the freaking time. I think I “fell down” in Call of Duty: World at War at least 20 times last night before finally realizing that I should probably pick my shots better. In most games, that’s what you do - you fall down and die.

In the spirit of Halloween, I’ve compiled a short list of some of the ...

Although not strictly a videogame, some of the goofs in the more recent Nancy Drew games are quite amusing.

When you drop reactive chemicals;

The Good News:

The gas you created wasn’t poisonous to humans.

The Bad News:

It was to practically everything else. Just call yourself Nancy “Enviromental Disaster” Drew!

@Chintz

Yes, it was a weapon. But you could use it as a power-up, by firing it at the mirror to shrink yourself.

Reply

Chintz 3 months, 1 week ago on Wordpress

“In the classic game Duke Nukem 3D, one of the many power-ups in the game was one that made you shrink so you could walk underneath an obstacle.”

I’m pretty sure there was no such powerup. There was a shrink ray weapon, and you could get shrunk by it and then stomped in multiplayer.

[...] •10 of the Most Creative Video Game Deaths Ever [Wired] Game deaths used to not be deaths. Popeye spun into the air and fell into the water. Pepper Pete in Burger Time rolled around on the ground throwing a kicking tantrum. These sanitized depictions represented our collective discomfort with death at the time – at least death administered by an anthropomorphic fried egg. But as we’ve ... See all content

One of the old Need for Speed games (2?) had you driving on a road course that included a winding mountain road. The NFS games generally always kept you between the guardrails/fences/curbs/whatever, no going offroad. But there was one curve with no guardrail, and if you accidentally drove off it, it would cut to a scene of your car tumbling straight downwards. This cracked me up every time.

Most creative deaths were in the Punisher game. e.g, putting someone in a car crusher, impalement on an elephant tusk, pushing their face into a bear trap, burned alive in a cremation thing (don't know hat its called), throwing someone onto an open power grid and zapping them, throwing them onto a tree branch beneath a hungry snake which eats them, pshing their face into an airplane propellor, drilling ... My favorite death in Space Quest (1, i think?) was when the Geiger alien came out and … kissed you. Then, thinking you were okay, you’d continue playing the game, until near the end, when the thing burst out of your chest. Too bad you saved over your previous progress already.

As soon as I saw the headline I thought of Space Quest. Also a big thumbs up to Lemmings. Many great traps and falls from great heights. Also the mass suicide button made for great fun seeing how large a hole we could dig into the map.

Seriously? Orchid was flashing her breasts? I did not know that. She was always my favourite character in that game, mostly because she was the only girl and I liked trying to prove to my brother that girls were better. I particularly liked the death in Killer Instinct where you are fighting on a rooftop and your opponent pushes you off the edge to finish you off. Quite rude, but fun when that player ... Upon reflection, there should have also been a mention of the Leisure Suit Larry 1 STD "death." I don't know anyone who thought to use a condom the first time they played the game, and the resulting animation and text were probably one of the single best safe sex PSAs in history.

It certainly left an impact on my developing mind . . .

Reply

OneManWar 3 months, 1 week ago on Reddit

That game in general had some awesome deaths. Flush the toilet.... dead. Cross the alley, mugged to death. Take something in a store (like say... said condoms) and not pay? Shotgunned down by the store clerk. Ahhh, the memories.

No joke: I had completed Leisure Suit Larry 1 and was letting my older brother play it. My dad walked in at the point where Larry is arrested in the street for still wearing a condom after sex. Graphically, it's just Larry in a street with a cop calling him a pervert and it isn't clear why. When asked about what we were up to, my brother whined that he couldn't get past the cop in the street and that ... See all content

My favorite was the death in the Doom 3 2005 E3 leak.

After the boss at the end of the level killed me, I expected the game to end there. But it didn't. The boss then moved close to the corpse, and decapitated the head from player's dead body, and swallowed it. The whole thing feels like the ending of Cloverfield. I was just awsome Too bad this feature was not included in Doom3 when it was

Yoshi wasn't the strongest in Smash Brothers Melee. Ganon, Donkey Kong, and Bowser were all generally stronger while Fox, Falco, Marth, Roy, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, and Dr. Mario all had moves that beat out anything Yoshi could toss out. He had his perks (decent wave dash, double jump cancel, increased weight during double jump, above average strength), but he was far from the strongest character ... See all content

The also mention that the egg move wouldn't kill you "unless your health was way down". Don't you mean "unless your *damage* was way *up*"? Even then, I don't remember that move ever being able to kill, unless it carried you off a cliff.

Reply

ophanim 3 months, 1 week ago on Reddit

Even at a high % you could mash out of an egg in under a second if you were real good. You needed to get someone in an egg, send them over the edge, and follow up perfectly with a spike, which is to say that you have to do something very hard, followed by something very lucky, and ending with something almost impossible. For sheer lolz, Luigi's taunt was a meteor smash (or spike?).

Sidescroll through 8 worlds, collecting powerups and defeating enemies as you go along to defeat the evil boss at the end of the game.

Megaman introduced shooting (replacing jumping as an attack) which is a pretty fundamental change in the side-scrolling dynamic of SMB, so it wouldn't really qualify as a "clone", and I doubt anyone has ever claimed such.

Guitar Hero is a clear clone of DDR. This is debated?

KI = MK + combos. And KI changed (fixed?) the blocking controls to Street Fighter style. Not really a fundamental

Mario had fireballs.

Guitar Hero is a rip off of Guitar Freaks (made by the same people who made DDR).

KI has the button layout of Street Fighter, and aside from the graphic style and finishing moves is much closer in gameplay to it than to MK.
