Warren Bonesteel @ #18: Most of the reconciliation bills brought up by Republicans were about budgetary matters and were passed with bipartisan majorities, and in some cases, large ones. This reconciliation bill is an entirely different animal. It is a way of getting the Senate bill passed in the House and by-passing the typical Conference Committee set up to straighten out the different versions. Moreover, we are not talking about a small matter here. We are talking about the ultimate nationalization of one-sixth of the economy. In the end, you can put a handle on a Volkswagen and call it a portable car, but it’s still a Volkswagen. ... See all content Hide content

BC @ #50: If you’ve been cued in on Climategate and all the attendant fallout from it, you would know what so-called liberal (or progressives) think of science – how can we use and abuse speculative hypotheses to get control of everybody so everyone bows down to the great goddes Gaia. The equation is CO2 = DDT; just as Rachel Carson provided a speculative hypothesis that got DDT banned
, thereby leading to untold death and misery in Africa and Asia from malaria, so too, do the so-called liberals want to use a speculative hypothesis to get CO2 usage, if not banned, severely curtailed, and that too will lead to untold death and misery, this time, worldwide.
BTW Wind energy does not involve science or progress, and would take us back hundreds of years.

Shef @ #18: FYI – The lights were going out in California because of their foolish price controls policy on electricity.

Art – Terrific piece. One thought: Go Green’s CO2 = Rachel Carson’s DDT. Their aim is the same – the destruction of civilization and people in the name of the great goddess Gaia.

Sarah – I agree with Phinea @ 31: Bad idea, and eman @ #6 is spot-on as well. The problem is not in thre representatives. It is that our federal government has grown so much as to intrude on everything we do. That is not what the founders envisioned. My own pet ideas are to repeal the 16th and 17th amendments, but alas I doult that will ever happen. Their are too many special interests that live off the federal government (which is just what FDR envisioned would happen and wanted it to happen). It will take a special political will of the American people to return to a pre-FDR federal government, and so far, for their ?itching and moaning, that political will does not seem to be there. ... Ron – Frank Rich is just a small problem at the NYT. The big problem is the entire newspaper. It is an embarrassment to itself. Pinch Sulzberger has made it into an unreliable piece of fishwrap (Michelle Malkin’s term).

David Surls @ #66: We really don’t know whether McVeigh was a right-winger. That’s what the press said, and you know how reliable the press is. McVeigh’s partner (whose name escapes me) took a quick trip to the Philippines where another Moslem terrorist was holed up. Did he convey the information to McVeigh about how to make bombs out of fertilizer? We’ll never know. The Clintonistas never went down that line of inquiryt because it could have destroyed they’re meta-narrative about right-wing nuts. ... See all content Hide content

genghis @ #3 is onto something. Read Mark Steyn’s piece in NRO on Greece and its low birth-rate. The Greeks will disappear. Unfortunately, their place will like be taken by Muslims. The Steyn piece is here: http://article.nationalreview.com/426405/when-responsibility-doesnt-pay/mark-steyn
PAthena @ #20: Greeks and Jews never seemed to be able to live together very peaceably. See Philo
and Josephus on this.

Ron – I agree that the accusers should be arrested, and the parents at a minimum should be made to pay court costs. But I have one correction to your otherwise fine column: Israel does not use a jury system. It has judges who hear cases and arrive at a verdict.
