Doc your assumption is wrong for one important fact: the episode titled: the Incident. This episode introduces Jacob and a man not given a name (played by Titus Welliver,who is refered to as the man in black). Jack, I mean Jacob is interestingly enough wearing white. The beginning of the episode is set in the past, prior to the Black Pearl crashing on the island (Why do I mention this: because there is a ship pictured in the frame just off the coast of the island) According to an episode in season four Charles Whitmore is at an auction buying a diary from a slave ship, disappeared in 1848 known as the Black Pearl.

Furthermore to refute your point about Jacob being a ghost, then how does Ben not only see, but kill Jacob? This is also at the end of the Incident episode with the man in black, introduced at the beginning. So there is no way way that Jacob could be a mere spirit.

However, I will end on this point: What I believe the purpose of Jacob and the man in black, represent in the philosphical sense, is the duality of man: good and evil. ... See all content Hide content
