Thank you for the tips, David! The About page is an extremely important part of a website, yet it’s also often the most overlooked. I know we will be taking the time to review our About page and applying some of your tips to help improve it!

Even though I work in PR and pitching media is part of my daily life, a refresher on the practice is always welcome. After all, it’s called media relations for a reason, isn’t it? Aren’t we supposed to relate to the person receiving our pitches?
Despite what some people (apparently) believe, bloggers, journalists, and other members of the traditional and online media are
people too. When sending pitches, it’s common courtesy to be as honest and human as possible. Like you said, CC, when it comes to choosing between a stranger’s pitch and a friendly note, wouldn’t you rather read a friendly note?

If you have a corporate blog, make sure you include links to your social profiles there as well. Something as simple as “Follow X Company on Twitter!” “Add us on Facebook.” You can even write a blog post touting your new social media profiles. A simple blog post is less in your face than a press release that still shares the “hey, we’re here” message.
I
definitely agree with the email signature as well. I’m a huge signature advocate. I use one not only in my work email, but in my personal one as well. They contain different information, but the underlying idea is the same. An email signature is a wonderful branding tool, whether it’s a corporate or personal brand.

What’s the point of blogging if you’re going to close down the comments section once a post is two weeks old? The idea behind blogging is supposed to be creating conversation and engaging with people, isn’t it? Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t shutting down comments defeat the purpose of blogging?

This is so true. Social media can be terrifying to small business owners, especially if there is no one willing to teach them how to use it. It’s important the these people know that there are people willing to help them and that social media isn’t as scary as they think it is.
Thank you, Danny, for your insight and helping to empower small business owners everywhere.
